Updating firmware

Firmware updates can be performed using either a remote or local host workflow. The appropriate method depends on where the Smart Update Manager (SUM) is installed and how the target servers are managed.

Remote

The solution runs on a dedicated management system and updates managed servers through their iLO interfaces. This method is recommended for updating one or more servers from a centralized location. You launch SUM from the management server to perform the update.

Localhost

The solution runs on the target server and uses the online update workflow to orchestrate firmware updates. The target server must have a supported operating system installed and running. This method is recommended for updating a single server. You launch SUM from the target server to perform the update.

NOTE
Local host updates use the in-band CHIF interface to communicate with the local system. They do not connect to the local iLO over the network.
